Job Title: Estimator - Heavy Civil Infrastructure

The Estimator position is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for heavy civil infrastructure projects by analyzing drawings, specifications, and technical documents; developing quantity takeoffs; and evaluating labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor pricing for heavy civil construction projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation and analysis of blueprints, drawings, and design documents to prepare quantity estimates.
  • Review and interpretation of construction plans, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope.
  • Preparation of quantity takeoffs, including earthwork (cut/fill), paving, concrete, and underground utilities.
  • Development of cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment used in civil construction projects.
  • Solicitation and evaluation of pricing from material suppliers and subcontractors for estimating purposes.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and project meetings as required. 

Qualifications and Other Special Skills or Requirements: 

  • Preparation of quantity takeoffs using AGTEK takeoff software for earthwork (cut/fill), paving, concrete, and underground utilities.
  • Preparation of utility estimates from quantity takeoff through development of final cost estimates.
  • Review and analysis of geotechnical reports to assess subsurface conditions impacting earthwork quantities and estimating assumptions.
  • Working knowledge of HCSS HeavyBid estimating software, which is the primary estimating platform utilized by the company to develop detailed cost estimates for grading, paving, and underground utilities.
  • Ability to transfer or apply quantity takeoff outputs into HCSS HeavyBid estimating software to finalize estimates, including labor, equipment, and material cost build-up.
  • Strong understanding of construction equipment typically used in heavy civil construction for the purpose of developing accurate estimating assumptions.
  • Estimating experience related to public-sector infrastructure projects, including roadway and civil work.
  • Review of TxDOT specifications and city construction standards to identify scope requirements and cost drivers.
  • Strong understanding of construction materials and construction methods for estimating purposes, and industry estimating practices.
  • Understanding of subcontractor scopes of work and evaluation of subcontractor bids against project requirements.
  • Analysis of historical cost data, unit pricing, and estimating assumptions to support accurate estimates.
  • Identification and assessment of estimating risks and cost variables.
  • Experience reviewing DBE/MBE/SBE/MWBE participation requirements and bid documentation requirements for public-sector (city/municipal) construction bids.
